Getting to Kafue National Park

The park is located in the central/west of Zambia and is accessible from the east, west, north and south.  Kafue is perfect for self-drivers and offers different and contrasting scenery; it’s so many diverse landscapes and biomes in one park.  To enjoy the best that Kafue has to offer guests should visit the north, central and southern areas of the park.

Kafue National Park is accessible by air and road.

Air Travel

International Airports:   

  • Lusaka LUN and Livingstone LVI.
  • International carriers include Emirates, Qatar, Ethiopian, Kenya Airways and Royal Zambian Airlines. 
  • Flights from South Africa to LVI and LUN are operated by Proflight and other major carriers
 

Domestic Flights:

  • Lusaka LUN, Livingstone LVI and most cities and the key national parks throughout Zambia. 
  • Airstrips within Kafue: Chunga (Central) | Ngoma (South) | Lufupa (north)
  • Guests can fly their own aircraft into Kafue too.
  • There are no scheduled flights to Kafue, only charter flights.

Road Travel

  • Kafue National Park is very popular with self-drivers and there is road access from all directions.
  • Kafue is fully accessible in the dry season (April to October) but is restricted in some areas in the wet season (November to April).
  • Camps near tar roads stay open all year, those in the north tend to close around November.  Camps in the central and southern sector are generally accessible year-round but each wet season is different so conditions change.
  • The Spinal Road runs from Kabanga gate in the far north to Dundumwezi gate in the south.
  • The road was re-graded in 2021 and culverts, crossings and run-off drains repaired.

 

Drive times: Lusaka to Hook Bridge – 3.5 hours | Livingstone to Dundumwezi Gate (South) – 2.5 hours | Mongu to Hook Bridge – 4 hours

 

  • The M9 tar road (Lusaka to Mongu) bisects the park from east to west.
  • All drive times are approximate, distances don’t change but road conditions do.
  • South: Dundumwezi Gate |  Musa Gate near Itezhi-Tezhi
  • Central Nalusanga – from Lusaka: 21k – west of Hook Bridge on M9 | Lufupa gate – west of Hook Bridge for access to north | Tateyoyo – western gate on M9 (from Mongu)
  • North: Kabanga – northern gate (from Kasempa)

 

Kafue National Park is surrounded by GMAs (Game Management Areas) and access to them and its lodges and campsites is from either within the park or from outside it.

Kafue National Park attracts visitors from Africa and the rest of the world. It’s accessibility, size, infrastructure makes it enjoyable for self-drivers and those that prefer to fly.

Visa Information

Entry fees for visitors were cut by 50% on 1 January 2022. Visitors can obtain a visa on arrival or via an e-Visa online prior to travel.

Single entry, double entry and multiple visa types allow visitors to travel in and out as they wish, subject to the rules for each.  A Kaza UniVisa allows for travel between Zambia and Zimbabwe multiple times plus day trips to Botswana via Kazangula.
