NOTES:
Please check with your accommodation regarding the closest airstrip as there can be potential geographic differences e.g. although Mayukuyuku is in the Northeast sector of the Park it is better served by the Chunga airstrip in the central sector of the park. Factors such as this example are too lengthy to note here, so please check with camps before planning a trip. Likewise, some airstrips are only prepared and suitable for dry season use.
Closest Main Roads
From the East and the West the Kafue is relatively easy to get to as it is actually bisected by Zambia’s main East – West road (the M9) which runs from the capital Lusaka to Mongu in the far West. The M9 runs through the central sector of the Park and makes many camps easily reachable for a weekend away even in the wet season.
From the South and Livingstone (Zambia’s most iconic tourist destination and easily accessible from neighbouring Zimbabwe and Botswana), the Kafue National Park has benefited from a massive road upgrade project which has meant that the South of the Park is within easy reach from Livingstone. Kaoma on the T2 (trunk road from Lusaka to Livingstone) is now a smooth two hours from Lake Itezhi Tezhi and then Kaoma is only a further 128km from Livingstone on the T2.
From the North (Copperbelt) the Park can be accessed from the main M18 road from Kitwe. From the M18 to the Kabanga gate in the very North of the park it is 150km.
